Classification of Dysgraphia

In the earlier post, we had discussed about Dysgraphia, what is it and what are its symptoms. Now, in this blog we shall discuss about the types of Dysgraphia. This learning disability is majorly classified into 3 types namely:

1.      Dyslexic Dysgraphia- This is a disability in which the student is able to copy the content from a source or draw pictures, but is unable to do spontaneous writing when sentences are dictated or he/she has to write on his own. The fine motor speed is like that in normal cases giving an indication of the cerebral functioning being effective. The writing is illegible and spellings are incorrect. The student may not necessarily be dyslexic in this case.

2.      Motor Dysgraphia- The fine motor speed is impaired i.e. below average and so the spontaneous writing as well as copied writing is improper. Even the drawing becomes difficult. It does not affect the spelling while doing oral practice, but they become incorrect while being written. Generally such students hold their pen/pencils incorrectly and it is observed that they write in extreme slants.

3.      Spatial Dysgraphia- In this type of Dysgraphia, the student is unable to understand the importance of spaces while writing. It makes the writing, both spontaneous and copied, and drawing illegible. The spellings are incredibly poor though the fine motor speed is normal. The children may have problems in activities that require coordination, for example, tying a shoe lace, buttoning up a shirt etc.
